GUEST POST with Dot in the City | Work Attire Edition

I am thrilled to be joining you today! When Melissa suggested I guest blog, it took me a bit to decide what to share with you. I started thinking about everyday challenges we all have. It's not really a challenge, but some days getting dressed can be a challenge, mostly because I want to look ready for work, yet show some personal style.
I've been thinking a lot about my wardrobe lately. Partially, because I can't wear a good portion of it now that I'm 16 weeks pregnant. I've also been thinking about what I want my pregnancy wardrobe to consist of as I build it. It takes me back to about eight years ago when I transitioned from student to professional. Honestly, I didn't give a lot of thought to the kinds of clothes I was buying when I was in college and grad school. I also lived in a part of the country that was pretty casual. If I wore jeans to my part-time job every day in Colorado no seemed to notice.

Fast forward through graduation and I found myself on the east coast with a full-time job where I was not allowed to wear jeans. That's right for the first three years of my professional career I was forbidden to wear jeans. It was brutal, but I survived. Now, that I find myself in a somewhat similar situation, I am giving careful considering to each piece I buy, even if I only plan to wear it for the next six-ish months.

A woman's wardrobe can be complicated, but it doesn't have to be. Sure, I love the many options we have especially compared to men, but a great foundation should be laid before we get too crazy with the latest fashion trend. I don't think color blocked dresses are going to be quite as hip in 2015...but I could be wrong.

My wardrobe basics usually consist of brown pants, solid cardigans, solid dresses, a handful of blouses, a suit jacket and comfortable yet cute shoes. I try to buy pieces that can be mixed with others to create more versatile looks. I put together a few inspiration boards. The first is more classic look in black and white and the second includes navy and grey as the base.

Finally, here are a few tips for building a basic work-ready wardrobe:

>> Choose a color pallet and try to stick with it. If you look better in brown than black, you may want to buy more brown/khaki items as your base. You should still own some black, but if you're more comfortable in a different hue, it's okay to veer from that (I own mostly browns and have only been wearing black more recently).

>> Spend more money on timeless/classic items because you'll want them to last longer. Spend less money on the seasonal trend since you won't be wearing it long.

>> Accessories are really the key to dressing up or down an outfit. Be aware of what it means to be overdressed in your workplace and try to avoid it. You don't want to stand out too much.

>> Trying to figure out where to start in your quest to build a work-ready wardrobe? Consider what you'd wear to an interview. How can that look be transformed to a day in the office (i.e. exchange the jacket for a cardigan)?

If you enjoyed these tips, I hope you'll stop by my blog, dot in the city, where I share life. To be honest, I'm not actually a fashion blogger, but I do love to write about everyday situations and solutions. You can catch me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram too!

Thank you so much Beth for the great tips and for stopping by the blog today! Her guest post couldn't come more at a perfect time since I have fairly recently had to transition from college girl closet of comfy yoga pants and hoodies to the world of pencil skirts, flats and no jeans (well, except on Casual Friday!). I hope you all got inspired to work on your professional attire... I sure did. I need to find more comfy, classic pieces that won't wrinkle when I sit at my desk for 8+ hours! It is about time some fashion posts come back to the blog :)

OUTFIT POST | YELLOW CORDUROYS

My perfect yellow pants.
These pants were the perfect va-va-voom to get the day rollin' the right way, which it did! I wore these last week and it was the right kick-butt outfit to make myself be the most productive I've been in awhile. I've been in sort of a lag when it comes to staying focused lately. I just want to do so much in so little time that I can't even focus on one task because I'm thinking of another!

outfit deets
I got these corduroys (yes, I had to google how to spell 'em) from Gap a couple years ago but they still sell this 1969 style (buy 'em here!) Didn't see the same color but they are some of the most comfortable pair of pants and I am super, super picky when it comes to pants. The flannel was borrowed from my Catherine and these brown flats are from Target from years ago! You can't go wrong with flannels and corduroys in the mountain town I live in ;)

Did you notice my watch says 11:11?
The battery is broken so I set it at 11:11 for the time being as a filler, but I think I kind of like the idea of always having it there and not knowing what time it is. I used to be so caught up in what time it was and how much time I was spending on something so it's refreshing not surrounding my life with the idea of time. The bracelet is one of my favorite quotes and bracelet to wear. It's a nice constant reminder.

Told ya I'd bring you more outfit posts.
We'll see how lazy I get this Spring Break ;)

Imaginary Closet

Once upon a time,
in a land far, far away without credit card payments, tuition, deadlines or alarm clocks, there existed a tree that grew money. Real money where college girls could visit and pick as many dollar fruits necessary to buy dresses of all sorts from Mod Cloth. Also in this far, far away land existed to-go closets where everyone could have infinite room for all their beautiful dresses and take them wherever they please. Whenever they would wear these dresses, magical things would happen! Finding love isn't just for princesses. Love existed everywhere...in their bellies (because cuisine was exquisite in this land) and in their hearts. Life was just as beautiful as Pinterest makes it out to be. With their dresses by their side, beautiful college students lived happily ever after.
The End.

Fridays

This is my first | it's the little things | post hosted by Lindsey over at From Aisle to Aloha. She is one of my favorite bloggers so I decided to jump on the wagon and share the little things that have made my week :]
+ List making
First off, in order for me to somewhat function throughout the day, I make lists. It gives me goals and then I always feel a sense of accomplishment once I cross them off. Lists keep me focused and organized, so if anyone is feeling overwhelmed...make a list! It can look impossible in the beginning, but once you cross those to-do's off, it's a wholllllle other feeling.

+ Craft nightOne thing that I never have enough in my week are arts and crafts, so to prepare for my roommate's part II of her engagement pictures I'm taking, we made some props for the event! We're planning on shooting them next week, but here's a little sneak peak ;)

+Welcoming the Fall with open arms
Here in Boone, Fall starts a little early and ends even earlier, so it's always best to take FULL advantage of the scarf, cardigan and tights wearing weather before it gets to the 5 inch coats and obnoxious boots kind of weather. I finally get to wear my favorite ankle boots that were a hand-me-down!

and a little bow to top it off.

outfit details
top: traded with roommate, originally Forever 21
shorts: Philippines ($10!)
bow: Philippines ($2!)
shoes: hand-me-down from Dad's girlfriend

Other exciting things this week:
+ First Her Campus meeting! [I got a position as a Staff Writer. We're an online magazine for woman on our campus! First issues comes out in 11 days.]
+ Re-activated my Netflix account! My travel channel shows are now on there (Yes!)
+ Revamped the blog! New banner, About section and links on the side. Gave it a nice little makeover :)
What were the little things that made your week?

WIWW

To get rid of the "middle-of-the-week blues," I decided to wear one of my favorite yellow dresses that was given to me from one of my best friends and fellow blogger, Renée. I can't believe I don't wear this dress enough! Love the color, the embroidery and the fact that Renée knows my taste.

Today Hannah & I also went to Goodwill today to look for some props for Part II of the engagement/save the date photos! Naturally, I found something other than what we went in looking for. I'm a sucker for a good find! I would say 50 percent of my closet is thrifted, but somehow I'm okay with that. Thrifting is the way to go :]

Thank you Hannah for taking some of the photos!

the details of the outfit
dress: gift
cardigan: Forever 21
earrings: Dollar Tree [not kidding!]
purse: Thrifted Dooney & Bourke vintage {$4!}

Here was the "find" of the day!
Introducing my new, {$3!} picnic basket! It even comes with a strap :] Thank you Hannah for modeling for me. What a sport :]

Here's to Wednesdays and probably good-bye to the warmer weather :[, but hell-o Fall!

Sunday's Someday 002 [imaginary closet]

Currently I have been obsessed with these looks!
Especially the high waist black pencil skirt. I think I've worn mine about three or four times this week! Wanna know a secret? All the ones I've bought are from Goodwill! At least with my experience, nice place to find good staple items. What I love about the black pencil skirt is that you can make it business casual, formal or make it fun...like adding a Fedora!

Like I know anything about Fashion... but I do know I like my black skirts :)

Here's to another work week!

OSCARS.

Last night was the 83rd Annual Academy Awards!
I was slightly disappointed with James Franco & Anne Hathaway as hosts with Hathaway trying too hard and only two out of eight successful wardrobes, and Franco not trying at all. I still respect him for getting his doctorate though :] The beginning was phenomenal, but they just went downhill from there...

Almost more media covered than then actual winners of The Oscars, are the best/worst dressed.
Since I am personally happy with the results of the winners, I'll be put two cents on the dresses.

Favorites.
At first, I didn't know how to feel about Mila Kunis' dress, however, the more I saw it, the more I loved it (on her). I don't think this dress is for me, but on her it looks fabulous.
I was expecting Natalie Portman to look phenomenal. Loved everything about her look and her speech.

Least Favorite.
I was so so so so dissapointed in Nicole Kidman's dress. I chose this as my least favorite ( even though there were some that came close) because usually I love her look! This was just....all wrong.

Is it me or were there not as much red carpet coverage or celebrities this year than most? I missed certain actors! Where was Leo? Where was Kate? Where was Ellen Page? Zoe?

mv.

What did you all think?
